The Root Of Cognitive Architecture Essay - 1600 Words
1. Introduction and Background The root of cognitive architecture goes back to 1950s during which the topic of creating programs capable of reasoning about problems in different domains, developing insights, adaption to new situations and reflection on themselves started to receive general attention. This domain, which lies partly in artificial intelligence area, may be realized in four different ways [2]: ïÆ'Ë Systems that think like humans ïÆ'Ë Systems that think rationally ïÆ'Ë Systems that act like humans ïÆ'Ë Systems that act rationally The exact definition of the cognitive architecture can be presented as a process-level theory about human cognition and is a design to create artificial intelligent agent which proposes a computational process like human. 1.2 Cognitive Architecture Classification As well as any other broad areas in architecture, cognitive architectures have also been classified into different groups based on different criteria. But, one of the least fine-grained classifications which are mostly used today is as categorizing it into three main areas: symbolic (also referred to as cognitive), emergent (connectionist) and hybrid. [1] These definitions will be used later on in explaining the three architectures mostly focused on today, so we better shed more light into them (figure 1) Figure 1:Taxonomy by Duch et al from [6] 1.2.1 Symbolic Architecture Symbolic architecture is the classical view of how the architecture of the human mind works. A famous American actor and activist, Woody Harrelson, in response to the bodies falling in the war against terrorism said, The war against terrorism is terrorism. Noam Chomsky, a renowned linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, logician, political commentator, activist and professor at MIT was once asked by a 9/11 truther1 about his views on the war against terrorism. Clasenââ¬â¢s intent is to argue his position that horror in the media can be connected to our roots as Homo sapiens sapiens. Regardless of Clasenââ¬â¢s first-year essay-writing ability, his reasoning and evidence are fairly effective in persuading a scientific reader that our evolutionary cognitive architecture is directly connected to our enjoyment of simulated horror. The Golden Ratio has been considered by many aesthetic philosophers to be the most pleasing proportion for works of art and architecture. It is well documented how the Golden Ratio has been utilized in pieces of art and architecture; however, it also finds its place in music. For example, Erik Satie, a French composer, utilized the golden ratio to write several pieces. The golden ratio is also found in the musical piece ReflectionsRead More The Contribution of Patient Case Studies on our Understanding of Cognitive Processes2214 Words à |à 9 Pages Although it shares cognitive neuroscienceââ¬â¢s roots, cognitive neuropsychology has developed into a discrete discipline. While cognitive neuroscience studies neural organisation of the brain, cognitive neuropsychology concerns itself with the brainââ¬â¢s functional architecture; Coltheart (2010) describes this as a distinction between brain and mind. According to, among others, Coltheart (2002, cited Coltheart, 2010) this makes cognitive neuropsychology a branch of cognitive psychology rather than neuroscienceRead MoreThe Themed Land Concept Of Parks1131 Words à |à 5 PagesIn ââ¬Å"Consuming the West: Main Street, USAâ⬠, Philips (2002, p.32) describes the Disney main street as Not the continuation of any recognizable geography or history but rather an idealized construction of small-town America that never was. Research has confirmed the theory that the younger children are, the easier it is for them to learn as their cognitive development is at the optimal level to learn and retain information (Jha, 2012). Research has also shown that the achievement gap that exists between kindergarten students tends to widen through the school years (Early Education for All, 2005).
